Robert Suermondt

The work of Robert Suermondt (°1961), a Swiss artist who has been living in Brussels for years, is considerably hybrid in nature. He starts from photos which he cuts out of newspapers and magazines and works them into a painting. Or he photographs fragments of people in the street. Often, he focuses on the image of the masses, human activity the way it is portrayed in mass media. Paintings with vibrating edges, left-out faces, white openings, cut-outs with pasted-in media photos: all of them attempts to make the authoritarian all-encompassing image more porous, to open it up. Het werk van Robert Suermondt (°1961), een Zwitserse kunstenaar die al jaren in Brussel woont, is behoorlijk hybride. Hij vertrekt van foto's die hij uit kranten en magazines knipt en neemt ze onder handen in een schilderij. Of hij fotografeert fragmenten van mensen op straat. Dikwijls concentreert hij zich op het beeld van de massa, het menselijk bedrijf zoals het wordt voorgesteld in de massamedia. ‘Parrot in the Belly’, Transit 08 05 -> 13 06 2010

is a provocative exhibition title. In a way, the parrot in the belly says something about the digestion of existing images. On the long wall in galerie Transit, the artist composes a photographic line and a pictural line, like a double horizon. The one line consists of paintings, a quartered canvas, a diptych of a painting and a street shot of legs. The other line consists of self-made black and white photos, in which paintings are shown as well. A video of cut-out photos shows a fast succession that pulls circles, stars, lines to the foreground. It becomes an all-encompassing installation in which the windows play their part. Every work makes the eye move. Here, the spectator, invited along a walk, is made to move also.
‘Redistribution des pièces’, a publication by La Lettre Volée in Brussels is presented in the exhibition. It is a richly illustrated book that includes the text ‘Robert Suermondt ou la peinture-cinéma’ by Pierre Sterckx in both French and English.

'Parrot in the Belly' is een prikkelende tentoonstellingstitel. Ergens zegt de papegaai in de buik iets over het verteringsproces van bestaande beelden. In galerie Transit componeert de kunstenaar op de lange wand een fotografische lijn en een picturale lijn, als een dubbele horizon. De ene lijn wordt gevormd door schilderijen, een gevierendeeld doek, een diptiek van een schilderij en een straatfoto van benen. De andere lijn bestaat uit zelfgemaakte zwart-witfoto's waarin tevens schilderijen voorkomen. Een video van uitgeknipte mediafoto's is een snelle opeenvolging die cirkels, sterren, lijnen naar voren haalt. Het schuift op naar een totaalinstallatie waarin de ramen meespelen. Elk werk doet het oog bewegen. Nu wordt ook de toeschouwer in beweging gebracht door een wandeling aan te bieden.
In de tentoonstelling wordt 'Redistribution des pièces' voorgesteld, een publicatie van La Lettre Volée in Brussel. Het is een rijk geïllustreerd boek met de tekst 'Robert Suermondt ou la peinture-cinéma' van Pierre Sterckx in het Frans en het Engels.
