TECHNOCALYPS
A documentary by Frank Theys
3x50 min. English spoken, subtitles NL/FR

Are we prepared for dealing with the prospect that humanity is not the end of evolution?

‘Technocalyps’ is an intriguing three-part documentary series on the notion of transhumanism by Belgian visual artist and filmmaker Frank Theys.
The accelerating advances in genetics, brain research, artificial intelligence, bionics and nanotechnology seem to converge to one goal: to overcome human limits and create higher forms of intelligent life – to create transhuman life.
Frank Theys conducts his enquiry into the scientific, ethical and metaphysical dimensions of these technological developments. The film includes interviews by top scientists and thinkers on the subject worldwide, including Marvin Minsky, Ray Kurzweil, Hans Moravec, Terence McKenna, Bruce Sterling, Robert Anton Wilson, Margaret Wertheim, Rael, the Dalai Lama and many more.
“Technocalyps is an impressive voyage through technological developments and scientific fantasies, but it is above all a rich documentary about ideas. Frank Theys has managed that the often utopian discourses of scientists is paralleled by the sober view of the artist.” (De Standaard)
"Technocalyps uncovers the primitive basis of our knowledge. It lures science away from its clean and save laboratories into the trouble waters of human hope and pride." (De Morgen)
"I love this documentary, especially the third part on the religous and the technological - just brilliant." (Sohail Inayatullah, professor Futures Studies at Tamkang University, Taipei)

Technocalyps is a VOTNIK production, co produced by Toneelhuis, KunstenFESTIVALDesArts, KVS, Eris Films and supported by VAF (Flemish Film Fund) and The Evens Foundation
